“Microglia specific sex differences and their impact in Alzheimer’s disease”

Abstract: Inflammatory processes are a central pathological hallmark besides Abeta and Tau pathology in Alzheimer’s disease. These processes are differentially regulated in males vs. females, based on sex specific differences in immunology and microglia responses. Genetic risk SNPs, combined with inappropriate reactivation of genes located on the inactive X-chromosome, affecting innate immunity genes, could explain the increased incidence of Alzheimer’s disease in women. Microglia derived from patient and control iPSC have been implemented to validate these effects in a human in vitro disease modelling approach.
