The Department of Neuroscience Hires Two New Associate Professors

New hires

The Department of Neuroscience warmly welcomes new associate professors Celia Kjærby and Carmelo Bellardita.

Celia Kjærby & Carmelo Bellardita

Celia Kjærby

Celia Kjærby has a master’s degree in human biology (2007) and a PhD degree (2012) from the University of Copenhagen. After three years as a postdoctoral researcher in California, USA, Celia continued her research career at the Center for Translational Neuromedicine. In 2023, Celia obtained a DFF Inge Lehmann and Lundbeck Foundation Fellowship grant, allowing her to establish her own research group.

"I am excited to join the Department of Neuroscience and continue my academic journey in this dynamic and collaborative environment that values both research excellence and academic community. The department’s strong and diverse research profile presents a unique opportunity for my team and me to grow and explore new scientific directions. I look forward to contributing to impactful research, forming meaningful collaborations, and engaging in teaching that fosters curiosity and motivation among students,” Celia says.

Carmelo Bellardita

Carmelo Bellardita has a master’s degree in medical biotechnology (2008) and a PhD degree (2012) from the University of Milan, Italy. He continued his research career as a postdoctoral researcher at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Carmelo has been affiliated with the Department of Neuroscience since 2018, first as a postdoctoral researcher, then as assistant professor and since 2023 as associate professor and research group leader.

Carmelo’s research is focused on investigating neural circuitries driving movements and the neural alterations underlying spasticity and motor paralysis after spinal cord injury. While he is currently working from 07-4, Carmelo’s lab will be relocated to the newly designed Neural Control of Behavioural Dynamics Research Unit, located in building 33.3, starting in September.

”I am excited about the opportunity to help shape the next chapter of Danish neuroscience and to contribute to the growing impact of the Neuroscience Department at the University of Copenhagen — by building bridges across disciplines, fostering innovation, and working closely with my new colleague, Associate Professor Celia Kjærby, and our talented colleagues,” Carmelo states.
