Changsi Cai awarded prestigious grant for vision restoration project
Associate Professor Changsi Cai has been awarded a prestigious Novo Nordisk Foundation Hallas-Møller Ascending Investigator grant to lead an innovative project aimed at restoring vision through advanced neurotechnology.
The project, titled Neuro-Engineered Vision Restoration through Integrated Cortical Prosthetics (NEW-VISION), will explore how artificial stimulation of the brain’s visual cortex can be designed to replicate the patterns of natural sight. By combining neuroengineering, artificial intelligence, and advanced brain imaging, the research seeks to generate visual signals that closely resemble those produced by the human visual system.
Blindness and severe visual impairment affect hundreds of millions of people globally, particularly in cases where damage to the visual pathways cannot currently be treated. The NEW-VISION initiative aims to address this unmet need by deepening scientific understanding of visual physiology while developing next-generation cortical prosthetic technologies.
The project represents a significant step toward functional vision restoration, with the potential to transform treatment options for individuals living with irreversible vision loss.
