1.5 million for research project on pericytes and stroke

PostDoc Bjørn Hald has been granted 1.5 million DKK to fund his research project "Pericytes and electrical signaling in ischemic stroke injury".

The project has been generously funded by "Læge Sofus Carl Emil Friis og hustru Olga Doris Friis Legat" and "KØBMAND I ODENSE JOHANN OG HANNE WEIMANN, f. SEEDORFFS LEGAT" and covers salary and running costs for two years.

This project investigates whether (1) protection of long-range signaling along blood vessels and (2) protection against permanent contraction of pericytes may salvage brain function under ischemic stroke. Long-range signaling permits ischemic signals to reach and dilate the upstream flow-controlling feed arteries while prevention of pericyte contraction is necessary for effective perfusion of the dense cortical capillary network. We expect to produce new knowledge regarding cortical flow-regulation and possibly identify strategies that may lead to improvements of stroke treatment.
